Modernism

1. Modernism started in the year 1890’s and it approximately lasted till the 1945’s.

2.  It was based on making use of means that was rational as well logical in order to gain
    knowledge.

United Colors of Benetton

Visually document the United Colors of Benetton campaigns from 1980's to 2000's.

What changes and what stays the same about the Benetton brand?

Benetton's aims and values for their company is to promote social commitment as well as ethical behaviour and a concern for the environment.

throughout all their publishes, Benetton have always made it their duty to always include their logo on every image they create, in order to advertise their company. Their logo stays consistent with a clear and simple design. I do not think that much change except for the use of different races to create the effective conceptual image.

Research three contemporary brands that you as a designer admire and desire.

KFC

  Philosophy
Kfc’s aim is to satisfy their customers in every possible way they can. They consider their customers, their philosophy.
Mission

Their mission is to see fast foods in a user friendly environment that is fast moving and that is appealing to health minded and pride conscious customers.

Identity and Image
They make use of Flat colours. Colours of red, white and black. Their type font is clear and neat and easily readable.
How I would change the logo
I would make the background even simpler, maybe just make use of the type and the barrel and incorporate it into something simple.

Volkswagen

http://mkalty.org/volkswagen-logo/
     Philosophy

Their philosophy is to treat their customer’s well by making them come first. They want to build a relationship with their customers. Their company growth is of great importance to them in order to produce and be more successful.

     Mission

Their mission is to offer attractive, safe and environmentally sound
vehicles which can be compared in an increasingly tough market
and set world standards in their respective class.
   Identity and Image
Their design is clear and Memorable.
     How I would change it
Their brand is already simple enough. I would try to play with colour in order to bring out the letters “W” and ”V” out more.

Ebay

http://assets.fontsinuse.com/static/use-media-items/7/6988/full-1500x800/50564279/logo.png

Philosophy
It has proven its ability to not only become the largest online site to monitor safe trading between buyers and sellers all over the world but also has been able to develop a user-friendly site that merely anyone can use.
Mission
To position itself as not only a site to buy and sell goods, but to shop, collect and potentially even open a small or large scale online trading business for individuals where anyone can practically sell anything.
Identity and image
-      Simple and memorable
-      Playful use of colour
-      Striking and visually appealing
       How I would change it
I would maybe incorporate the idea of worldwide trading company in the
logo as well. Make use of only one or two colours in the type.

Conceptual Design

Three Examples of South African Conceptual Design

Conceptual Design is simply an image that is visually strong and does not need any words to define or describe it because the Image speaks for itself.

Conceptual Images

What issues are being confronted?
Image 1
Endangered species and pouching
Image 2
Drinking during pregnancy
Image 3
Wildfires
What ideas are being promoted?
Image 1
Rhinos are not going to exist if we keep killing them
Image 2

Drinking while pregnant does not only effect you, it damages your baby’s immune system as well.
Image 3
Animals get killed not only trees
What is the viewer being made aware of?

Rhino pouching
Image 2
Alcohol abuse
Image 3
Animals die because of wildfire
What is your personal view of the status quo regarding the value of conceptual design, compared to commercial design?
Conceptual design is less words with an image that tells the story. The image is striking, that is why no words are needed.
Commercial design is more words and less imagery.

The Importance of a Manifesto

The Importance of a Manifesto in response to the first things first manifesto 2000 and incomplete manifesto for growth, by Bruce Mau.

   Response for it

-      Designers need the money to pay bills

-      Designers get to share and develop skills and grow as a team.

-      It gives opportunities to learn more about the industry and meet designers

-      It provides exposure to your portfolio for other companies

-      Free benefits

-      Work gets seen by everyone.
Response against it

-      Work gets restricted
-      Opinions does not always get noticed
-      The value of your work is more important than money
-      Sacrificing your time for your clients work rather than personal work.
-      Working at a company is more restricted than being a freelancer.

  1. Konik, I. 2007.”Thematising the ugly side of sublime technological development in Sonzero’s Pulse (2006) as an inadvertent critique of the ‘technocentricism’ of postmodernity”.

According to this article, I believe that Konik is trying to explain the age where we are currently living in today and being blinded by technology. Since it has become part of our lives, it has contributed something positive as well as something negative to our lives. It has better our lives in a sense of making things that was difficult for us to do on our own, more easier. However,  it has also destroyed our ability of wanting to think and do things on our own. We are constantly relying on technology to complete our daily tasks.

Technology led us to the discovering of new things, and as we learn more of these things we constantly find ourselves totally depended on technology in such a way that we can simply not live without it.

South African style and subcultures

South African style and subcultures

Kwaito

Kwaito has been the sound of South Africa which is known to be the urban “mix masala” of the South African music genres as well as the western house music including hip hop. It defines the generation that came to being right after the apartheid era.  Just like hip hop evolved in America, kwaito had also moved to the mainstream from their cultural basement. This happening enabled black youngsters to gain financial opportunities, which was something their parents could not support them with.  Yet today they are big pop stars of our rainbow nation, contributing to society and influencing cultures as well as the economy in ways that were impossible in the past.

Images describing Kwaito

Kwaito gave an important part of the country’s youth a voice, as well as a variation of icons to celebrate. Kwaito’s biggest achievement was to create a productive foundation for a South African vernacular idiom. Kwaito has helped made many campaigns possible, they are as follows: Vodacom’s “Yebo yes” advertising campaign, castle lager’s carwash advert as well as MTN’s latest “sms a fela” ( just sms) campaign.
Kwaito are strongly epitomized by the look and feel of the culture, by means of how they dress and the different dances they perform unifies it as a whole.
